All of them are optional. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission say you do not have to buy add-ons to get a loan.

Be picky

Nothing here is required to get financed.

Start with how you are buying the car. If you are leasing, tire and wheel protection and key replacement usually fit the way a lease works. If you are financing, we would suggest a vehicle service contract — extra repair coverage after BMW’s factory warranty — because year five is on you. Ask for prices in writing. Cancel unused coverage if the contract allows. Flood is an insurance question, not a dealership product.

Good to know

BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles, so a lease is covered for its whole term. If you buy and keep your BMW longer, BMW Ultimate Care+ can extend it.

How you drive

Lease or finance changes the list.

Lease: extra wear, tires, dents, keys. Finance: gap coverage if you put little down, a vehicle service contract if you will keep the car past the factory warranty.

Gap coverage

If the car is totaled or stolen, gap coverage — guaranteed auto protection — covers the gap between the insurance check and what you still owe. BMW Financial Services says this is included on its leases and optional on a loan. NerdWallet: insurer gap coverage often costs less than a dealer product.

Lease-end protection

Helps with extra wear when you return the car — BMW lists up to $5,000. BMW Financial Services leases only. Not sold in New York. Lease only.

Dent repair

Paintless dent repair on small dings. Helps on a lease if you park in tight lots.

Windshield

Chip and crack repair. A spidered windshield can be a lease-end charge.

Key replacement

A lost BMW key is expensive. BMW’s key plan also lists lock-out help, towing, and a ride home if you need it. Especially useful on a lease.

Vehicle service contract

A vehicle service contract is extra repair coverage after the factory warranty — BMW lists plans up to 7 years or 100,000 miles, with Platinum or Powertrain levels, and repairs with original BMW parts at an authorized center. We would suggest this if you are financing and will keep the car past year four. Usually low value on a short lease. Consumer Reports.

Prepaid maintenance

New 2026 BMWs already include 3 years / 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance. Extra plans fit people who keep the car longer.

Paint and interior

BMW lists all-surface interior and exterior protection. Ask what it covers on your car and get the price in writing.

Questions

FAQ

Can a dealer make me buy gap coverage or an extended warranty?

No. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission say these products are optional and not required to get a loan. Ask for prices in writing.

Do I need gap coverage on a BMW lease?

Gap coverage, or guaranteed auto protection, can cover the difference between the insurance check and what you still owe after a total loss. BMW Financial Services says gap coverage is included on its leases. On a loan, it is optional and worth discussing if you put little money down or take a long term.

Is tire and wheel protection worth it in Louisiana and in Baton Rouge?

The Road Information Program, a national transportation research group, reported in April 2025 that 60% of major roads in the Louisiana and Baton Rouge area are in poor or mediocre shape, costing drivers about $945 a year extra. BMW’s tire and wheel plan lists potholes, nails, and glass. Your auto insurance may also cover pothole damage, minus your deductible.

Does car insurance cover flood damage in Louisiana?

Comprehensive insurance covers floods and hurricanes. That is an insurance question, not a dealership product. After a total loss on a loan, gap coverage is what covers the difference between the insurance check and what you still owe.

Is an extended warranty worth it on a BMW?

A typical three-year lease stays inside the factory 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, so an extra vehicle service contract is usually low priority on a short lease. If you are financing and will keep the car past year four, that is when we would suggest a vehicle service contract. Consumer Reports found owners often paid more than they got back; if you buy one, favor the plan from BMW.
